About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead the Node sub-team's technical direction, architecture decisions, and code quality standards
Design and develop Evry Health's backend platform
Lead backend architecture and system design, including service and API structure, asynchronous and real-time processing, rate limiting, resiliency, and relational/document data modeling
Document architecture decisions for stakeholders
Design and implement complex backend features using Node.js and TypeScript
Design and implement Next.js API routes and Node.js backend services
Define API designs and contracts, authentication/authorization, caching, messaging, and database access
Partner with frontend and mobile teams on stable, well-documented API interfaces
Provide day-to-day technical leadership to the Node sub-team
Lead code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and establish and enforce Node coding standards
Own backend performance optimization, testing strategy, and CI/CD pipeline governance
Ensure HIPAA-compliant, secure, and high-availability services

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's degree in CS, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
7+ years of professional software development experience with primary backend expertise
Deep, demonstrable proficiency with Node.js, TypeScript, and Next.js (API routes) building production services and APIs
Strong relational and document database design experience
Experience deploying and operating services on a cloud platform; Azure preferred
Preferred: 10+ years of professional experience in backend or full-stack development
Preferred: Experience in healthcare technology, health insurance, or another regulated industry
Preferred: Experience with healthcare data standards (HL7 FHIR, X12, NCPDP) applied to data integration and API design
Preferred: Experience with real-time systems (WebSockets), event-driven architecture, GraphQL/tRPC, and monorepo tooling
Candidates must reside in the Eastern or Central time zones
Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure
Must live in a location that receives an existing high-speed internet connection/service
