About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide full administration of SQL Server across on-premises VMware and Azure Cloud environments
  • Install, configure, patch and maintain SQL Server instances and databases
  • Automate repetitive database administration work
  • Develop, review and optimise stored procedures, queries and indexes and resolve performance issues
  • Manage backup, restore, security, access controls and database health
  • Act as a technical escalation point and work with vendors on complex issues
  • Complete morning production checks covering system health, overnight jobs, monitoring and alerts
  • Monitor database platforms using Redgate SQL Monitor and Azure Monitor and refine alerting thresholds
  • Participate in daily cross-team stand-ups and track work through Azure DevOps boards
  • Handle ITSM incidents, BAU tasks and service requests through delivery
  • Own incidents as DRI, including triage, resolution, root-cause analysis and blameless post-mortems
  • Automate alert management and resolve database incidents through closure
  • Raise, document and implement changes under client governance, including presenting at CAB
  • Apply data protection controls for PII data and participate in DPIA processes
  • Communicate with technical and business stakeholders throughout incidents and changes
  • Remove repetitive toil using PowerShell/dbatools, T-SQL, SQL Agent/Elastic Jobs and ADO pipelines
  • Build runbooks and self-healing remediation for recurring alerts
  • Integrate database changes into CI/CD using Redgate or SSDT with release validation
  • Support project work alongside BAU and contribute to the client change portfolio and roadmap
  • Support Dynamics case and claims data flows using Azure Data Factory pipelines
  • Assist with Azure Synapse, ETL and batch processing
  • Advise on reliability, cost and security for database workloads, including VMware-to-Azure migrations
  • Apply least-privilege, auditing and encryption standards
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, procedures and provisioning records in Confluence

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong, hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA covering administration, configuration and performance tuning
  • SQL Server experience in VMware-virtualised and Azure Cloud environments, including Azure SQL or SQL on Azure VMs
  • HA/DR expertise with Always On AGs, FCIs, log shipping, geo-replication, and backup/restore testing
  • Practical understanding of SRE principles, including SLIs/SLOs, toil reduction, RCA and post-incident review
  • Good T-SQL skills, including writing, troubleshooting and optimising stored procedures
  • Scripting and automation skills using PowerShell/dbatools, T-SQL and Python
  • Experience with ITSM processes, including incident, service request and change management and CAB
  • Experience with Azure DevOps boards for task tracking and delivery
  • Good documentation skills, such as Confluence
  • Excellent communication skills with technical and business stakeholders
  • Experience handling sensitive or PII data and following GDPR and DPIA controls
  • Desired: Redgate tooling, Azure Monitor and Log Analytics
  • Desired: Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics and ETL/batch experience
  • Desired: Microsoft Dynamics data flows and integrations
  • Desired: Database CI/CD with ADO pipelines and Infrastructure as Code exposure using Bicep/Terraform
  • Desired: Azure cost optimisation and FinOps for data platforms
  • Desired certifications: Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300), Azure Administrator (AZ-104), VMware VCP, ITIL Foundation or SRE Foundation
