About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the assessment of EDC’s most complex financing and insurance transactions
  • Identify significant environmental and social risks and recommend key mitigation measures
  • Apply the Equator Principles, the IFC Performance Standards, the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and other international standards
  • Analyze ESIA reports, due diligence reports, monitoring reports, thematic reports, ESAPs, audit reports, consultant terms of reference, requests for proposals, and environmental and social policies
  • Manage relationships with internal and external clients, consultants, international financial institutions, development finance institutions, and export credit agencies
  • Conduct field visits in Canada or abroad, generally lasting 1 to 6 days and occurring 1 to 5 times per year
  • Negotiate the inclusion of environmental and social commitments in financing and insurance agreements and determine their appropriateness
  • Provide expert advice to senior executives, clients, and EDC business lines
  • Monitor transaction and project performance and resolve issues related to non-compliance with commitments
  • Guide and mentor other Environmental and Social Risk Advisors
  • Recommend changes to environmental and social due diligence processes and practices
  • Provide specialized advice on the interpretation and application of environmental and social policies, procedures, job aids, and products
  • Contribute to the evolution of EDC’s environmental and social risk management approach

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • University degree in social or environmental sciences (e.g., international development, sociology, anthropology, geography, corporate responsibility, ecology, environmental management, or geosciences)
  • At least 7 to 10 years of experience providing ESIA and environmental and social impact due diligence consulting services, or equivalent experience in sectors relevant to EDC
  • In-depth knowledge of ESIA and due diligence principles, frameworks, and standards, including the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards
  • Proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in an environment with competing priorities
  • Ability to identify, simplify, and concisely communicate the key issues in complex commercial transactions and provide advice based on client needs
  • Expertise in assessing social or environmental impacts, particularly biodiversity impacts
  • Experience as an independent consultant on environmental and social issues for lenders or private-sector companies working on major projects, or within international financial institutions
  • Experience working with companies in developing countries, preferably in the Indo-Pacific region and Latin America
  • Fluency in both official languages
  • Ability to communicate in other languages relevant to EDC
  • Candidates must meet government security requirements
  • Preference will be given to candidates legally authorized to work in Canada at the time of application (Canadian citizens or permanent residents)
