About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build and operate backend microservices and pipelines for ExTrac’s decision intelligence platform
- Take ambiguous problems from requirements gathering and technical design through production delivery with minimal oversight
- Own services end to end, including consolidating or decommissioning replaced services
- Contribute to and lead system design and architecture decisions
- Design APIs for internal teams and customers, maintaining clear contracts and versioning
- Design storage schemas, indexing strategies, access patterns, and boundaries
- Develop Go and Python microservices for data collection, processing, and querying
- Maintain production standards for latency, cost, reliability, and instrumentation
- Build and operate high-throughput data streaming pipelines
- Improve scalability, robustness, and latency
- Optimise databases and index performance
- Work directly with analysts to translate product feedback into system changes
- Partner with AI and frontend teams on cross-functional features
- Improve deployment pipelines, service templates, observability, and engineering environments
- Participate in a four-stage interview process: hiring manager interview, technical assessment, competency interview, and founder interview
Requirements
What you’ll need- Applicants must be eligible to obtain UK security clearance
- Applicants must be nationals of a NATO member state, Australia, or New Zealand
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Demonstrated ability to stand up production-grade services and own features end to end
- Proficiency in building microservices using Go or Python
- Solid understanding of distributed systems, databases, and software engineering patterns
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and infrastructure as code
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Comfortable writing clear technical documentation and discussing requirements with engineering and wider team colleagues
- Breadth across the stack, including deployment pipelines, database behaviour, and security engineering
- Interest in how the product is used and willingness to incorporate analyst feedback into requirements discussions
- Desirable: current experience with Go-based microservices
- Desirable: experience with Elasticsearch and PostgreSQL
- Desirable: experience with streaming or event-driven pipelines
- Desirable: experience with feature flags and trunk-based development
- Desirable: experience operating multi-tenant systems where data isolation is a hard requirement
- Desirable: experience in software for defence, government, or compliance-constrained environments
