About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Advise public and private entities on regulatory changes, compliance, and reporting needs for indirect taxes
  • Develop and implement tax strategies, operating models, and compliance frameworks throughout the tax lifecycle
  • Identify opportunities for tax optimization, credits, refund recovery, and exposure reduction
  • Manage indirect tax strategies, compliance, remediation processes, controversies, and corrective filings
  • Support tax process reviews and technology transformation
  • Lead tax controversy and advisory projects using state and local tax knowledge
  • Apply EY methodologies and tools to deliver team and client outcomes
  • Challenge traditional procedures and develop new approaches to tax matters
  • Build client relationships and demonstrate financial services industry knowledge
  • Monitor state and local tax developments and emerging marketplace trends
  • Lead complex processes, solutions, and projects with focus on quality and risk management
  • Manage programs, projects, resource planning, and engagement economics
  • Provide leadership and direction to teams
  • Develop solutions to complex problems and recommend policy and procedure changes
  • Manage client relationships, revenue generation, and commercial engagements
  • Provide thought leadership and drive innovation
  • Travel regularly to meet external client needs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree required (4-year degree) with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or economics
  • Typically, no less than 5–7 years relevant experience
  • A CPA certification, or good standing as a member of a state bar
  • Strong tax technical skills, including tax research and writing, flow-through entity taxation, income and franchise taxes, transfer taxes, and multi-state compliance
  • Experience communicating with tax authorities, advocating for clients, and writing persuasively
  • Project management experience delivering high-quality work products in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Expertise in tax legislation and impact assessment
  • Experience with indirect tax refund and recovery review
  • Ability to drive process improvement and optimization
  • Skills in risk mitigation and data analysis and interpretation
  • Familiarity with tax compliance and reporting requirements
  • Business skills in building and managing relationships, client trust and value, and communicating with impact
  • Complex problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Proven track record in driving outcomes and learning agility
  • Commercial acumen and experience leading teams
