About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the technical strategy for AI Safety, determining research directions and building risk-mitigation technologies
- Lead a high-performing R&D team through hiring, mentorship, and technical-culture development
- Guide complex machine learning projects and secure top-tier publications
- Shape offerings for frontier labs and security institutes
- Oversee technical delivery of AI safety and security projects, evaluations, and red-teaming
- Represent Faculty externally through thought leadership and major global industry events
- Collaborate with business unit directors and commercial teams on research investment and client needs
Requirements
What you’ll need- Proven track record designing and leading high-performing technical teams
- Ability to manage R&D budgets and mentor senior technical staff
- Deep expertise in AI safety research, including alignment, interpretability, and robustness in LLMs or safety-critical systems
- Strong scientific background evidenced by high-impact machine learning publications
- Comprehensive understanding of transformer architectures
- Ability to set research priorities aligned with long-term organisational goals
- Ability to synthesise complex technical concepts for C-suite executives and the research community
- Strong commercial acumen and stakeholder management skills
