About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead development of FAR.AI’s written content
  • Shape FAR.AI’s narrative, content, and messaging across the communications team
  • Work with researchers to translate research findings into actionable insights for policymakers and corporate decisionmakers
  • Partner with technical teams early in research projects to identify key narratives and messages
  • Edit academic papers for clarity and scholarly communication, including structuring papers to submission standards and working in LaTeX
  • Write blog post summaries of research papers for technically knowledgeable audiences
  • Co-write blog posts, newsletters, and position papers with technical teams
  • Translate research findings into policy briefs and other content for non-technical audiences
  • Own written content on FAR.AI’s website and collaborate on its structure and presentation
  • Own the quarterly newsletter and consolidate updates into a clear narrative
  • Establish and steward a consistent organizational voice and narratives around strategic priorities
  • Equip staff with messaging and framing to represent FAR.AI’s narrative
  • Review key social media posts for consistency with FAR.AI’s voice and narrative
  • Work with the CEO and technical leaders on op-eds and position papers
  • Produce reports based on pre-publication findings for policymakers and frontier labs
  • Develop content for public-facing products such as the AI security leaderboard

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a writing role, such as staff writer, science communicator, or editorial lead
  • Portfolio of published work demonstrating the ability to turn complex technical material into clear, accurate writing
  • Alternatively, 3+ years of experience in machine learning or a closely related field such as maths, stats, or physics, as a researcher or engineer
  • Portfolio of published writing across varying levels of complexity, covering at least two of: papers/technical documentation, blog posts, social media, op-eds, or policy briefs
  • Proven ability to own projects independently from concept to completion
  • Interest in AI safety and FAR.AI’s mission, and willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with the AI landscape and experience engaging with governments, AI companies, or policy think tanks
  • Strong working understanding of machine learning concepts
  • Experience with the academic publication process, including arXiv, conference submissions, peer review, and LaTeX
  • Track record of writing, ghostwriting, and/or editing op-eds
  • Track record of writing for policymakers, such as policy briefs, especially in technology and innovation policy
  • Background in science journalism, research communications, or research writing
  • Ability to overlap with 9am–noon Pacific time for globally remote work
