About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Translate HHS materials into various languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and French
- Provide over-the-phone and/or video interpretation services for HHS meetings, conferences, briefings, or training events
- Develop and disseminate communications promoting English language education and literacy resources for LEP communities
- Develop materials informing LEP individuals and families about federally supported and community-based English language learning programs and resources
- Develop materials encouraging English language acquisition to improve access to Federal services, health care, employment, and civic participation
- Produce plain-English materials at accessible reading levels for digital, broadcast, and print distribution
- Develop materials reinforcing that English proficiency enables direct, independent engagement with HHS programs and services
- Support HHS OMH engagement with community-based organizations, health centers, schools, libraries, and faith communities
- Juggle multiple translation tasks simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment
- Attend and contribute to project status update meetings at least biweekly
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in linguistics or a foreign language, such as Spanish, Chinese, Russian, or French
- At least three years of experience working as a translator or a similar occupation
- At least three years of experience editing, proofreading, and formatting in Microsoft Word
- Ability to juggle multiple editing tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
- Must be eligible for an HHS Public Trust security clearance
- Bilingual or multilingual English speaker, with fluency in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, French, or other major language(s) spoken by a significant portion of the U.S. population (desired)
- Master’s degree in linguistics or a foreign language, such as Spanish, Chinese, Russian, or French (desired)
- Federal government, government contracting, or public health experience preferred but not required
