About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as Firebird’s in-house counsel and strategic business partner across its labels and publishing companies
- Structure, draft, and negotiate joint ventures, label investments, recording and profit-split deals, publishing contracts, distribution, sync and licensing, brand and sponsorship deals, and live performance agreements
- Own day-to-day legal and business affairs for a growing label and publishing roster, primarily focused on recorded music
- Manage outside counsel on litigation, IP disputes, and regulatory matters while rationalizing outside legal spending
- Use Firebird’s Claude instance and other AI tools to streamline contract review, drafting, research, and tracking
- Participate in business development and creative meetings and provide legal guidance during deal formation
- Partner with Finance & Accounting and Royalties teams to implement and track deal terms from signature to statement
- Work with creative services teams on partnership deals with brands and media companies
- Track contract deadlines, options, deliveries, and audits
- Maintain an organized, searchable library of executed agreements, forms, and legal memos
- Translate rights, obligations, and legal risk into plain language and flag issues early
- Monitor domestic and international entertainment trends
- Mentor and manage junior business affairs counsel
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years in progressively senior roles drafting and negotiating music industry agreements
- JD
- Active membership in the New York or California State Bar
- Experience using AI tools such as Claude for contract review, drafting, or research
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for high-volume, fast-moving work
- Strong negotiating, drafting, research, and communication skills
- International or cross-border deal experience is a plus
- Team-first mindset and ability to work across departments
- Self-starter energy, sound judgment, and commitment to doing things right
- Deep familiarity with the music industry and enthusiasm for closing deals
