Key responsibilities & impact

Provide technical direction within a delivery team and lead by example in design, implementation, quality, and operational ownership
Own features and technical improvements end to end from discovery and solution shaping through build, review, release, monitoring, and iteration
Develop full-stack software using Java, Spring, Angular, JavaScript, and related technologies
Use Cursor agent-first to specify bounded work, provide context and constraints, supervise execution, review generated changes, and retain accountability
Apply spec-driven development and version reusable prompts, rules, skills, and context
Validate AI-assisted changes through automated tests, evaluations, code review, security checks, and human judgement
Create and improve reusable agentic skills and workflows
Design and evolve scalable, resilient solutions, including third-party integrations and legacy modernisation
Drive engineering standards covering clean code, automated testing, CI/CD, secure-by-design practices, observability, documentation, and safe rollback
Troubleshoot complex issues, contribute to incident response, and address root causes and follow-up actions
Partner with Product, Business Analysis, Quality Engineering, Architecture, and Operations to shape requirements, manage risk, and deliver outcomes
Use delivery and quality measures such as lead time, escaped defects, change failure, reliability, agent intervention, and rework to guide improvement
Mentor and coach engineers through pairing, reviews, feedback, and knowledge sharing

Requirements

What you’ll need

Strong experience as a software engineer with clear progression to senior-level ownership, including designing, building, releasing, and operating production software
Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring, together with Angular or comparable modern front-end technologies and a sound understanding of full-stack architecture
Fluency in Cursor as part of normal engineering delivery
Practical experience of agentic software development in a real team, delivering substantive production work through a controlled, repeatable workflow
Strong engineering discipline across automated testing, Git and code review, CI/CD, observability, secure development, documentation, and production support
Ability to reason about architecture and trade-offs across distributed systems, integrations, data, security, reliability, and maintainability
Track record of delivering high-quality software predictably, working collaboratively across disciplines, and taking accountability for outcomes
Experience mentoring engineers and raising team capability through technical guidance, constructive review, and knowledge sharing
Desirable: experience with Flow Next or a comparable agentic, spec-driven delivery framework
Desirable: experience creating reusable agent skills, rules, context, or workflow automation; familiarity with MCP, tool calling, agent orchestration, evaluation, or observability
Desirable: experience with GCP, cloud-native delivery, infrastructure as code, highly available systems, and retail or hospitality technology
Technology stack includes Java, JUnit, Mockito, Selenium, Spring, JavaScript, Angular, Flutter, Dart, SQL, MongoDB, GCP, and Cursor
Must be UK based and able to travel to the Birmingham office a few times a month
