About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Supervise and oversee legal and administrative staff and the quality of representation and pro se services
- Provide direct representation and pro se legal assistance to detained individuals in Florence and Eloy and some released clients in Arizona
- Second-chair supervised attorneys in deportation defense cases
- Conduct case reviews and provide training, mentorship, coaching, and support
- Lead implementation of changes to legal service scope or delivery models
- Oversee case review meetings, hiring, new-hire orientation, and legal staff training
- Participate in program development, strategic planning, fundraising, outreach, and special projects
- Maintain accurate and timely team data and reports
- Oversee grant and contract data collection, complete quarterly funder reporting, and participate in network calls, meetings, and trainings
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate staff goals, caseloads, and work plans
- Establish team meetings and support effective team communication
- Collaborate on hiring, orientation, employee relations, performance management, and staff evaluations
- Oversee case-file acceptance, opening, management, and closing procedures
- Formulate legal strategies and allocate limited resources
- Develop and implement quality-assurance protocols
- Ensure compliance with relevant legal bodies and agencies, ethical standards, confidentiality, and conflict-of-interest requirements
- Develop relationships with immigration attorneys, public officials, law enforcement, nonprofits, EOIR, USCIS, government and social service organizations, and community organizations
- Attend meetings with officials and stakeholders and communicate about advocacy initiatives and community legal training
- Support Florence Project outreach and development activities
- Report to the Adult Program Manager or Associate Program Manager
- Travel regularly between Tucson, Phoenix, and Florence offices and to detention facilities and immigration courts in Florence and Eloy
Requirements
What you’ll need- J.D. and licensed to practice law in any state or jurisdiction
- Experience supervising staff or interns, or demonstrated leadership potential and ability to be trained as an effective manager
- Commitment to advocating for indigent immigrant clients
- Strong litigation experience and/or oral advocacy skills
- Strong legal research skills
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Ability to work with diverse populations
- Highly organized, innovative thinker, able to work in high-volume settings with limited resources
- Excellent problem-solving, research, and analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently and adapt to conflict, pressure, crisis, or changing priorities
- High ethical standards and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to pass federal and state background checks
- Fluency or advanced proficiency in Spanish required
- Willingness and ability to travel
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Proven computer skills and advanced understanding of basic office applications
- 2+ years of direct representation in immigrants' removal proceedings strongly preferred
- Extensive knowledge of immigration law, including deportation defense, asylum, and criminal-immigration law issues strongly preferred
- Prior advocacy work in immigrant rights, human rights, LGBTQ rights, criminal justice, or experience working with trauma survivors is a plus
- Experience with databases and data tracking, such as Legal Server, is a plus
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and lift up to ten pounds, with accommodations potentially available
- Must comply with the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy unless exempt due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief
