About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as the most senior technical authority on the Digital Twin team
  • Integrate physics modeling efforts across laser, target, chamber, target injection/tracking, and manufacturing subsystems
  • Lead scientists developing and owning simulation codes for major IFE subsystems
  • Validate subsystem code physics and rigorously quantify and report model uncertainty
  • Set scientific direction, modeling standards, and validation philosophy for the Digital Twin team
  • Lead development of an integrated IFE plant model
  • Conduct trade-off analyses across design candidates and identify parameters affecting plant viability
  • Work with experimental physics teams to validate simulation codes against shot data from Focused Energy, NIF, OMEGA, ELI, and others
  • Collaborate with the Digital Twin team, national labs, and the broader IFE community
  • Present modeling work to executive leadership, program management, and investors

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree in Physics with a specialization in Plasma, Laser, Nuclear, or related field
  • Ph.D. strongly preferred
  • Deep expertise in IFE/ICF physics, such as target implosion design, laser-plasma interaction, hydrodynamic instability, burn physics, or chamber/neutronics
  • Track record developing, validating, and publishing physics simulation codes, including hydrodynamic, radiation-hydrodynamics, PIC, ray tracing, or Monte Carlo neutronics codes
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Fortran, C++, or equivalent
  • Experience with HPC and large-scale simulation workflows
  • Experience with integrated, systems-level modeling, including coupling physics domains, managing code interfaces, uncertainty propagation, and sensitivity analysis
  • Familiarity with Digital Twin methods, reduced-order modeling, or physics-informed ML is desirable
  • Published or patented work in IFE/ICF or related plasma/laser physics is desirable
  • Experience with requirements flow-down, performance budgeting, or margin analysis is desirable
