About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Contribute to development and architectural design for prototypes and safety-critical ground-based autonomous solutions
- Perform quantitative and qualitative hazard identification, evaluation, and control analyses based on the Software System Safety Program Plan and Software Development Plan
- Ensure software development processes incorporate safety considerations into autonomous vehicle systems for defense applications following MIL-STD-882E
- Address functional safety, AI/machine learning, embedded systems, and software development in complex system environments
- Define software architecture and safety concepts, and derive requirements from safety analyses
- Incorporate Model-based Safety solutioning across Forterra’s software ecosystem
- Perform hazard analyses within a Model-based Safety environment
- Perform Software FHA, FMEA, FMECA, FTA, Modes/States/Transitions Hazard Analysis, and Robotic Behavior/Capability Assessments
- Communicate software safety design considerations and progress across the engineering organization
- Develop and refine safety concepts, including architectural design, safety mechanisms, and Level of Rigor verification activities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop test cases for safety-critical software
- Stay informed about industry trends and advancements in software safety
- Participate in trade studies and testing activities to verify software requirements
- Participate in Systems Engineering Technical Reviews, including SRR, PDR, and CDR
- Participate in Software System Safety Technical Review Panels, working groups, and Level of Rigor audits
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Software, Systems, or related Engineering discipline, Computer Science, or related technical field; Master’s degree preferred
- 5–10+ years of work experience as a Software Safety Engineer, System Safety Engineer, or related role focused on autonomous or safety-critical systems
- Specific experience with MIL-STD-882E, JSSSEH, AOP-52, or related software safety standards such as DO-178C or ISO 26262
- Experience with software development processes such as ASPICE and coding standards such as MISRA
- Experience managing requirements using Jama, DOORS, or Polarion
- Experience with issue tracking using JIRA
- Familiarity with autonomous vehicle perception, prediction, path planning, and control
- Strong analytical skills in linear algebra, geometry, and probability
- Experience analyzing C/C++ software or software-based tools such as SCADE or Simulink
- Experience with complex ecosystems such as RTOS, complex microprocessors, and hypervisors
- Experience supporting and guiding teams through unit testing, software integration testing, and embedded software testing
- Strong communication skills and ability to communicate complex engineering issues to a diverse team
- Software or safety certifications such as ASPICE or equivalent preferred
- Experience with robotics, AI, and/or machine learning preferred
- Direct experience designing and developing safety-critical software, autonomous vehicles, or advanced ADAS applications preferred
- Position may require eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
