About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead digital security trainings on risk assessment, password managers, multifactor authentication, encrypted voice calls and text messages, online privacy, device security, and mitigating online harassment
  • Work with team members to meet clients’ needs from intake through service implementation and follow-up
  • Assist in developing curricula and supporting materials for digital security trainings
  • Contribute to public editorial content, including guides, blog posts, and newsletters
  • In the long term, train SecureDrop clientele, including administrators and journalists, on installing and using the platform
  • Perform other responsibilities assigned by the deputy director of digital security

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Passion for the First Amendment and protecting press freedom rights
  • Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, computer science, journalism, education, or related field preferred, or four years of cybersecurity awareness training experience
  • One-plus years of experience working in newsrooms and with journalists, or equivalent understanding of journalists’ threat model and landscape
  • Two to three years of experience training on technical skills for a nontechnical audience
  • Experience creating training materials for technical topics, ideally digital security
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with journalistic threat models or equivalent applied experience with threat modeling for at-risk groups
  • Knowledge of core principles of encryption and secure communication tools
  • Understanding of computers across desktop and mobile operating systems
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Track record of collaborating with teams in in-person and remote settings
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Ability to translate complex issues into succinct, accessible language for multiple audiences
  • Flexibility to undertake occasional international travel
  • Preferred: experience with instructional design or curriculum development
  • Preferred: connections to journalism university programs or closely related education programs
  • Preferred: experience with circumvention/anti-censorship technology
  • Preferred: experience working with international audiences on digital security topics and global contexts
  • Preferred: experience writing beginner-friendly digital security guides or posts
  • Preferred: ability to speak or write non-English languages, especially Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, and/or Russian
