About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP and CQI activities and participate in process improvement
  • Educate patients regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, and treatment options
  • Welcome patients and assess wellbeing, vascular access, vital signs, weight, and treatment readiness
  • Cannulate vascular access and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as directed
  • Monitor patient responses and report significant changes to registered nurses or supervisors
  • Document treatment parameters, evaluations, vital signs, interventions, and patient responses
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Perform machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
  • Obtain laboratory tests, prepare specimens, and coordinate collection by laboratory courier
  • Clean and disinfect machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments
  • Train applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
  • Enter treatment data, review treatment sheets, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions
  • Support infection-control audits, practices, policies, and patient/family education
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional care
  • Educate patients about home dialysis products, benefits, modalities, and treatment options
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit
  • Assist with modality transitions, supply ordering, and TCU inventory

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred
  • Continued employment dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program
  • Successful completion of CPR certification
  • Must pass the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations considered
  • Ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients and assisting with ambulation
  • Ability to frequently and for prolonged periods stand and bend over
  • Ability to occasionally push/pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force
  • Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet
  • Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations
