About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Assist with maintaining a safe and clean working environment
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement
  • Provide patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease process, and vascular access
  • Welcome patients and assess their wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
  • Monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide prescribed interventions
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Perform machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
  • Document treatment parameters, patient condition, interventions, and treatment outcomes accurately and timely
  • Report significant information, patient-condition changes, and unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and prepare, label, store, and coordinate collection of specimens
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments
  • Conduct pretreatment machine alarm testing and initiate the Solution Delivery System
  • Assist with training direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
  • Participate in infection control audits, practices, and patient/family education
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care
  • Reinforce education about home dialysis, treatment options, and peritoneal dialysis setup
  • Coordinate transition to the patient’s chosen modality
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit
  • Complete CQI records, treatment data entry, treatment-sheet reviews, and patient-chart preparation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required
  • Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred
  • Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program
  • Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of CPR certification
  • Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment
  • Ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and bend over
  • Ability to push/pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force
  • Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet
  • Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community
