About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), patient satisfaction, and process improvement activities
  • Educate patients regarding adequacy measures, disease process, and vascular access
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide prescribed interventions
  • Monitor patient response and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Perform machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
  • Document treatment parameters, patient information, interventions, and responses accurately and timely
  • Obtain laboratory testing and prepare, label, store, and coordinate collection of specimens
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist with training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
  • Maintain environmental integrity and follow business, ethical, and infection-control policies
  • Complete CQI records and enter treatment data into the designated clinical application
  • Review treatment sheets, complete/correct omissions, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions
  • Support infection-control audits, practices, and patient/family education
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care
  • Reinforce education about home dialysis, treatment options, and peritoneal dialysis setup
  • Coordinate transition to the patient's chosen modality
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines in the Transitional Care Unit
  • Assist with Transitional Care Unit supply ordering and inventory

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required by the state, if applicable
  • Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred
  • Successful completion of the organization dialysis training program
  • Successful completion of CPR certification
  • Ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients and assisting with ambulation
  • Ability to frequently stand for prolonged periods and bend over
  • Ability to occasionally push/pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force
  • Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet
  • Ability to work in a healthcare environment with possible exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
  • Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations; regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meeting travel may be required
  • Must take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment
