About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
- Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
- Welcome assigned patients and assess their wellbeing
- Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law
- Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
- Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
- Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
- Monitor patient responses and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor
- Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
- Perform machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
- Obtain laboratory testing and prepare, collect, label, store, and arrange courier pickup for specimens
- Maintain a safe and clean environment; clean and disinfect machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas
- Support continuous quality improvement, infection control audits, and infection control education
- Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
- Assist with training direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
- Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care
- Reinforce education about treatment options, home dialysis, and peritoneal dialysis setup
- Coordinate transitions to the patient’s chosen modality and liaise with FKC staff to support the patient experience
- Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the transitional care unit
- Assist with TCU supply ordering and inventory
- Enter treatment data accurately, review treatment sheets, prepare charts, and complete required documentation
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School diploma or G.E.D. required
- Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
- All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required
- Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred
- Successful completion of the organization dialysis training program required for continued employment
- Successful completion of CPR certification required for continued employment
- Must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, although failure does not preclude employment
- Ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients
- Ability to frequently stand for prolonged periods and bend over
- Ability to occasionally push/pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force
- Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet
- Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations
- Ability to work in a healthcare environment with potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
