About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Assist with patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients and assess wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weights
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as directed
  • Monitor patient response to dialysis therapy and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor
  • Calculate and enter ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Conduct machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
  • Obtain laboratory testing and prepare, label, store, and coordinate delivery of specimens
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and disinfected treatment environment
  • Train applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
  • Complete treatment records, charts, requisitions, and CQI documentation
  • Support infection-control audits, practices, and patient/family education
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional care
  • Educate patients on home dialysis products, benefits, treatment options, and peritoneal dialysis setup
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit
  • Assist with modality transitions, supply ordering, and TCU inventory

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred
  • Successful completion of the organization dialysis training program
  • Successful completion of CPR certification
  • Ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and bend over
  • Ability to push/pull equipment using up to 15 pounds of force
  • Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet
  • Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment
  • Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations
  • Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
