About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
- Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
- Welcome assigned patients and assess their wellbeing
- Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law
- Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
- Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
- Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide prescribed interventions
- Monitor patient responses and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor
- Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
- Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks
- Document treatment parameters, patient evaluations, interventions, and progress notes accurately and timely
- Obtain laboratory tests, prepare specimens, and coordinate collection and courier delivery
- Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas
- Participate in CQI activities and infection-control audits and practices
- Train applicable direct patient-care staff under nurse supervision
- Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care
- Reinforce education on treatment options, home dialysis, and peritoneal dialysis setup
- Coordinate transitions to patients’ chosen modality
- Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School diploma or G.E.D. required
- Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
- All appropriate state licensure, education, and training (if any) required
- Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred
- Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program
- Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of CPR certification
- Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment
- Ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community
- Ability to work in a healthcare environment with possible exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
