About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
- Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
- Assist with maintaining a safe and clean working environment
- Educate patients regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, infection control, and treatment options
- Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing
- Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law, and monitor access pressures
- Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, evaluations, and treatment parameters
- Initiate, monitor, intervene in, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
- Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
- Perform machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled
- Report significant information, patient-condition changes, and unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor
- Obtain laboratory testing and collect, label, prepare, store, and coordinate delivery of specimens
- Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments
- Conduct pretreatment machine alarm testing and initiate the Solution Delivery System
- Enter treatment data and complete, review, and correct treatment records and charts
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement and infection-control audits and practices
- Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care
- Support education about home dialysis, treatment options, peritoneal dialysis setup, and modality transition
- Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit
- Assist with transitional care unit supply ordering and inventory
- Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
- Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School diploma or G.E.D. required
- Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
- All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required
- Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred
- Successful completion of the organization dialysis training program required for continued employment
- Successful completion of CPR certification required for continued employment
- Must pass the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered
- Ability to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients and assisting with ambulation
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods and bend over
- Ability to push and/or pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force
- Ability to frequently lift/lower solutions up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet
- Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations; regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meeting travel may be required
