About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Welcome patients and assess wellbeing since their last treatment
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weights
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide prescribed interventions
  • Monitor patient responses and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Perform machine safety checks and document treatment parameters and interventions
  • Obtain laboratory testing and prepare, label, store, and arrange courier collection of specimens
  • Maintain a safe, clean environment; disinfect machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas
  • Participate in CQI activities and infection control audits and practices
  • Assist with training direct patient care staff under nurse supervision
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care
  • Educate patients about treatment options, home dialysis, and peritoneal dialysis setup
  • Coordinate transition to the patient's chosen modality
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit
  • Enter treatment data accurately and review treatment sheets and patient charts for completeness

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required
  • Demonstrated commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility preferred
  • Continued employment dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program
  • Continued employment dependent on successful completion of CPR certification
  • Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered
  • Ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, pushing/pulling equipment, and lifting solutions up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations; regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meeting travel may be required
  • Ability to work in a healthcare facility environment with potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
