About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform daily inspections of highway grade crossing signal systems and wayside signaling systems
- Travel to changing work locations while performing the same railroad signal work
- Follow mandatory Federal Railroad Administration regulations
- Work as a member of a cohesive team and independently without direct supervision
- Clean and maintain job sites, tools, and vehicles
- Maintain safety compliance and identify, correct, or report unsafe acts, conditions, and incidents
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections independently
- Safely operate heavy equipment to assist with grade crossing system installations
- Install, program, and calibrate railroad signal components and circuitry
- Verify site information against circuit plans
- Perform railroad signal troubleshooting
- Read and understand Railroad Timetable documents
- Use Signal Technician testing equipment and required tools
- Comply with Signalman Hours of Service regulations and railroad-designated PPE requirements
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- 2-5 years Railroad Signal Maintenance experience
- Successful completion of Hot Box and Signal Apprentice Training Program through Signal Training Solutions or prior experience required
- Ability to travel up to 100%
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Overtime may be required
- Experience maintaining, servicing, installing, and troubleshooting signal system circuitry and components
- Mechanical aptitude
- Ability to work without direct supervision
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment such as mini excavator, skid steer, and telehandler
- Knowledge of installing, programming, and/or calibrating grade crossing predictors, solid state crossing controllers, relays, resistors, gate mechanisms, and lighting circuitry
- Familiarity with AREMA Guidelines for Grade Crossing System minimum requirements
- Basic railroad signal troubleshooting skills
- Ability to verify site information against circuit plans
- Ability to read and understand Railroad Timetable documents
- Proper use of Signal Technician testing equipment and required tools
- Understanding of Signalman Hours of Service regulations
- Ability to comply with railroad-designated PPE requirements
- Successful background and drug test required
- Ability to comply with FRA, OSHA, employer, and customer-specific safety requirements
