About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct daily inspections of highway grade crossing signal systems and wayside signaling systems
  • Travel to changing work locations while performing the same railroad signal work type
  • Follow mandatory Federal Railroad Administration regulations
  • Work as a cohesive team member and independently without direct supervision
  • Clean and maintain job sites, tools, and vehicles
  • Maintain safety compliance and identify, correct, or report unsafe acts, conditions, or incidents
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections
  • Operate heavy equipment to assist with grade crossing system installations
  • Install, program, and calibrate railroad signal system components
  • Verify site information against circuit plans
  • Use signal technician testing equipment and required tools
  • Comply with Signalman Hours of Service regulations and PPE requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2-5 years Railroad Signal Maintenance experience
  • Successful completion of Hot Box and Signal Apprentice Training Program through Signal Training Solutions or prior experience required
  • Ability to travel up to 100%
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Overtime may be required
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to maintain, service, install, and troubleshoot signal system circuitry and components
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment such as mini excavator, skid steer, and telehandler
  • Knowledge of installing, programming, and calibrating grade crossing predictors, solid state crossing controllers, relays, resistors, gate mechanisms, and lighting circuitry
  • Familiarity with AREMA Guidelines for Grade Crossing System minimum requirements
  • Basic railroad signal troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to verify site information against circuit plans
  • Ability to read and understand Railroad Timetable documents
  • Proper use of signal technician testing equipment and required tools
  • Understanding of Signalman Hours of Service regulations
  • Compliance with railroad-designated PPE requirements
  • Successful background and drug test required
  • Must comply with FRA, OSHA, employer, and customer-specific safety requirements
