About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Identify, excavate, and record potential archaeological sites
  • Support Phase I through Phase III historical and/or prehistoric investigations
  • Follow GAI, client, OSHA, and applicable federal/state health, safety, and archaeological standards
  • Excavate, screen, and collect archaeological materials
  • Identify and record archaeological features and structures within project study areas
  • Photograph and map survey areas, testing locations, excavations, and observable cultural resources
  • Complete paper and/or electronic field forms accurately
  • Record soils using a Munsell soil chart
  • Use a compass for basic orienteering within project areas
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Maintain personal task management and adhere to deadlines and scope
  • Maintain and upkeep company-issued field equipment
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 1 to 2 years of experience
  • B.A./B.S. Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or associated degree; enrolled in field school; or equivalent skills and experience
  • Field-related experience or equivalent ability in excavation, accurate note taking and field form completion, sketch mapping, basic photography, and basic compass/navigation skills
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required
  • Must possess a driver's license
  • Must possess steel toed shoes
  • Must obtain and maintain a basic field kit
  • Ability to follow federal and/or state archaeological standards
  • Ability to walk 8 to 10 miles a day, sometimes in rugged terrain, while carrying tools and equipment
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 lbs
  • Ability to hike over varied terrain while carrying up to 25 lbs of gear
  • Ability to extensively dig/shovel and manually clear brush/vegetation
  • Willingness to travel up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend travel and/or work
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions
  • Basic oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to take direction and function positively in a team environment
