About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Identify, excavate, and record potential archaeological sites
  • Excavate, screen, and collect archaeological materials according to federal and/or state archaeological standards
  • Wash and/or process artifacts for laboratory analysis
  • Assist with laboratory tasks associated with post-field activities
  • Conduct Phase I through Phase III historic and/or prehistoric investigations
  • Identify and record archaeological features and structures
  • Document and map survey areas, testing locations, excavations, and observable cultural resources
  • Complete paper and/or electronic field forms accurately
  • Record soil color and type using a Munsell soil chart
  • Use a compass for basic orienteering within project areas
  • Follow GAI, client, and OSHA health and safety policies
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Work outdoors across varied terrain and weather conditions
  • Perform personal task management and adhere to project deadlines, budgets, and scope
  • Discuss technician work performance with managers
  • Convey field results clearly and concisely to senior cultural resources staff
  • Coach or mentor less experienced staff and potentially lead a small crew

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or a related field; associated degree, field school enrollment, or equivalent skills and experience also listed
  • Minimum 1–3 years of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) experience in North America preferred
  • Experience in archaeological field excavation techniques, artifact identification, data recording, mapping, and surveying
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel, including up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend travel/work
  • Independent means of transportation preferred
  • Required driver's license
  • Pre-employment drug testing required
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to walk 8–10 miles per day, sometimes over rugged terrain, while carrying tools and equipment
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects up to 40 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs of gear
  • Ability to excavate, shovel, screen soils, clear brush, and perform physically demanding fieldwork
  • Must possess steel-toed shoes
  • Basic knowledge of soils, Munsell soil chart use, compass/navigation, photography, sketch mapping, and field forms
  • Ability to work independently or under supervision, follow direction, manage personal tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to coach or mentor less experienced staff and potentially lead a small crew
