About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and develop approximately 12 Fastener Design Release Engineers and Technical Specialists
- Provide technical direction, prioritize workload, and balance team resources across vehicle architectures and programs
- Ensure high-quality engineering deliverables from program initiation through Start of Regular Production (SORP)
- Provide fastening and joining support to DREs, Technical Specialists, SQE, Buyers, Manufacturing Engineering, and suppliers
- Lead problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration through the vehicle program lifecycle
- Provide expertise in fastener selection, material and finish application, joint design, torque strategies, and fastening best practices
- Support robust fastened-joint design, including manual joint analysis before FEA
- Oversee fastening catalog content and best practices
- Support product investigations and resolve assembly plant, quality, spill, shortage, and related issues with durable solutions
- Review and approve fastener testing with laboratory and Fastening Engineering teams
- Partner with suppliers on new parts and sourcing activities
- Support static torque reviews for assembly plants when required
- Collaborate with Vehicle Engineering, Engineering Design Operations, and VDDV/CAE teams on fastening solutions early in the GVDP process
- Collaborate with global teams, share best practices, and mentor technical staff
- Remove roadblocks, improve processes, and ensure timely, high-quality delivery
- Champion Engineering With Simplicity (EWS) and lead GVHE deliverables
- Inspire and mentor the team, build a high-performance culture, anticipate challenges, and drive innovation in fastening strategies
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline
- 10+ years of fastening engineering experience
- Strong technical foundation in fastener selection and application
- Experience with material and finish selection
- Experience with joint design and torque specification
- Knowledge of fastener manufacturing processes
- Experience with fastening joint analysis using manual calculations prior to FEA
- Working knowledge of GM CAD tools, including NX, Teamcenter/Active Workspace, and VisMockup
- Proven ability to lead teams, develop talent, and motivate others
- Strong cross-functional communication and ability to influence technical decisions
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with composure, urgency, and sound judgment
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous environments and enable timely decision-making
- DFSS Black Belt certification preferred
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Business, or Management preferred
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle regularly and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review
- Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future
- Willingness and ability to travel less than 25%
