About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own hardware design and execution for electric power components such as Power Distribution Units, Battery Management Systems, power converters, and inverters
- Develop and improve hardware development processes with the center of expertise
- Collaborate with semiconductor, DRE, software, PCB layout, mechanical engineering, supplier, validation, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and safety teams
- Achieve program milestones through effective program management and execution strategies
- Lead embedded designs for advanced module architectures
- Lead new IC design and development strategies for advanced in-vehicle architectures
- Lead electrical schematic design and PCB layout
- Optimize hardware designs for cost, performance, reliability, and manufacturability
- Support digital and analog hardware designs including Ethernet, processors, memory, eFuses, FETs, HSD/LSD, and semiconductors
- Perform and review worst-case, power distribution, component compatibility, environmental, EMC, Weibull, and robustness analyses
- Represent the GM hardware team as a design expert in core technologies
- Optimize design verification tests and analyses, including five-point parametric testing and end-of-line production tests
- Lead development processes for supplier-owned and in-house designs, including PFMEA, control plans, monitoring systems, and EOL documentation
- Refine and optimize requirements against KPIs and maintain hardware design deliverables
- Lead peer reviews, resolve integration and interface issues, and support formal change control and ISO9001 documentation
- Support assembly plant issue resolution, product investigations, vehicle integration, and ECU warranty analysis
- Provide technical leadership for rapid issue resolution and root-cause analysis
- Lead cost-reduction initiatives from evaluation through implementation
- Provide direction to Design Release Engineers and create and maintain best practices
- Ensure KPIs for piece cost, investment, mass, base engineering content, performance, and IPTV are met
- Develop, review, and approve in-process electrical verification and component validation plans
- Develop improved analyses, simulations, and testing for standard validation plans
- Provide expertise in formal design, peer, and quality valve reviews
- Lead or support DFMEA, PFMEA, control plans, EOL testing, APQP, lean manufacturing, 8D issue resolution, ISO9001, and TS16949 compliance
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor of Science in Engineering required
- Master’s degree preferred
- 7+ years of experience designing automotive hardware electronics
- Experience creating digital and analog hardware interfaces, including schematics, PCB layouts, and supporting documentation
- Experience with launch excellence initiatives across requirements, product safety, systems engineering, quality, and analytics
- In-depth knowledge of low-voltage power distribution, including eFuses, FETs, thermal management, Li-ion batteries, and DC/DC converters
- In-depth knowledge of requirements engineering processes and tools, including DNG, FMEA, and Preliminary Hazard Analysis
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory and design requirements, including EMC, environmental durability, electrical robustness, signal integrity, and noise mitigation
- In-depth knowledge of hardware and embedded software verification and validation processes, including associated development and test tools
- Understanding of hardware design, failure modes, and operating principles of mechanical and electrical systems
- Thorough knowledge of design, development, testing, manufacturing, assembly operations, and engineering processes and procedures
- Proficiency with Mentor Graphics, Mathcad, PSpice, and Saber
- Knowledge of Ethernet, SPI, I2C, IsoSPI, UART, PCIe, SerDes, AVB, and CAN
- Knowledge of BIQ/GMS-like standards and operational improvements using CMMI, ASPICE, ISO 26262, and other best practices
- Strong oral, written, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including REDX, OpEx, and DFSS methodologies
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within Electrical and across other SMTs
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively, motivate employees, and drive results
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, resolve complex and unusual problems, and balance technical solutions with business priorities
- Preferred experience with compute, connectivity, Body, and low-voltage distribution systems, including electronic component manufacturing, assembly, PCB design, and manufacturing
- Preferred knowledge of RTOS concepts, CG2999, CPU utilization, quality data analytics, and Service/TAC
- Preferred experience with simulation tools and methods including CarSim, PreScan, Saber, Simulink, Synopsys/ANSYS, Sherlock, CFD, FEA, SPICE, MathCAD, MIL, SIL, HIL, and VIL testing
