About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Set technical direction for the control plane and data plane and how they integrate.
- Drive technical direction for managing thousands of vehicles from a single control plane, including configuration distribution, version management, device identity, and remote diagnostics.
- Design unified logging infrastructure across the vehicle software stack.
- Define SDK architecture, API design, versioning, and adoption approach.
- Set the approach for delivering software on Android, Linux, and QNX across General Motors compute modules.
- Design, implement, and maintain on-vehicle software through design work, code reviews, and prototyping.
- Optimize data egress, configuration delivery, convergence speed, and ECU CPU and memory footprint.
- Integrate with Azure, AWS S3, and Firestore for configuration delivery, device state reporting, and data egress.
- Set standards for reliability, performance, data privacy, and resource use on production ECUs.
- Define health metrics and observability; lead incident response, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Lead cross-organizational initiatives with application, platform, cloud, cybersecurity, privacy, and DevOps teams.
- Define the SDK roadmap with product stakeholders.
- Report status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership and partner teams.
- Contribute to the open source community through issue reports, documentation, and patches.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers, support team growth, and promote best practices.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 6+ years of hands-on development experience in C, C++, and related languages.
- Experience developing software for Linux, Android, and QNX platforms.
- Understanding of distributed systems, configuration management, and large-scale data pipelines.
- Experience designing, developing, or operating a control plane, fleet management system, or other large-scale distributed coordination service.
- Experience designing logging or telemetry software for operational visibility at fleet scale.
- Experience delivering SDKs or libraries used by other engineering teams, including API design, versioning, and adoption support.
- Understanding of network communication and security protocols, including mTLS and certificate-based device identity.
- Familiarity with Autosar standards.
- Experience leading initiatives across organizations.
- Expertise in software development and optimization.
- Experience troubleshooting issues in production environments.
- Technical communication and design documentation skills, including presenting status, risks, and tradeoffs to leadership.
- Has delivered software in a production environment and supported it once in the field.
- Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (UDS, CAN, SOME/IP, XCP).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their device management services.
- Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, protobuf, and gRPC.
- Experience building fleet management, OTA, or remote configuration systems, and contributions to Fluent Bit or other data intensive open source projects.
- Experience working with Firestore.
- Knowledge of security best practices for device provisioning, configuration delivery, and authentication of cloud to device traffic.
- Experience designing driver or HMI initiated capture flows, such as create and upload data.
- Automotive domain familiarity: ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics, failure and crash analysis.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
- Must not require GM immigration-related sponsorship now or in the future.
