About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Shape GM's engagement on state-level policy issues, including manufacturing and jobs, tax policy, vehicle technology, EV and charging policy, and dealer/retail policy
  • Develop policy, conduct advocacy, and engage stakeholders across a multi-state U.S. West Region, with particular focus on California
  • Operate and manage state government relations across assigned states
  • Build and maintain relationships with state government officials, business and policy organizations, and trade associations
  • Establish and manage coalitions and relationships with external consultants, firms, and trade associations
  • Advocate for public policies and regulations aligned with GM's overall interests
  • Lead advocacy initiatives and execute strategies on substantial policy issues affecting the automobile industry and GM
  • Develop and implement plans to achieve favorable public policy outcomes
  • Provide counsel and support to GM senior leadership
  • Develop strategic regional and state-level engagement plans
  • Provide updates and guidance to internal business partners on policy issues and developments
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Communications, Legal, Dealer Policy, and other stakeholders on engagement activities and outreach to public officials
  • Manage GM's political engagement strategy for a multi-state region, including national policy and political organizations and PAC resources
  • Establish and lead ad hoc cross-functional project teams as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree with 15+ years of professional experience in government relations, state advocacy, public affairs, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong understanding of state government affairs, including policy development processes and state-level political ecosystems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent project management skills, including setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and managing cross-functional projects
  • Proven analytical and deductive reasoning skills
  • Proven history of successful cross-functional collaboration in fast-paced work environments
  • Clear reputation for ethical conduct, integrity, and confidentiality
  • Deep experience working in California political and/or legislative environments preferred
  • Experience working on policy issues impacting the auto industry preferred
  • Ability to adapt and quickly analyze situations
  • No GM immigration-related sponsorship is available; applicants must not require sponsorship now or in the future
  • Ability to travel less than 25%
