About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead GitLab's Dedicated Infrastructure team, combining hands-on technical leadership with team development
  • Partner with the Product Manager to set priorities and deliver with quality and speed
  • Maintain at least 99.9% availability for Dedicated infrastructure, strengthen security, and automate operations to support more tenants at scale
  • Provide team direction and meaningful feedback while building shared ownership of development and operations
  • Improve platforms and tools to enable self-service production management
  • Recruit, onboard, and develop team members
  • Lead by example with proofs of concept and AI-assisted approaches; simplify processes and automate repetitive work
  • Model incident management, lead resolution and escalation, and document and teach best practices
  • Use data to prioritize work, quantify impact, manage risk and technical debt, and explain technical trade-offs to stakeholders

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A track record of building and owning large-scale distributed services, with the technical depth to evaluate architecture and guide technical strategy
  • Experience with fleet management, Terraform, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and automated provisioning at a scale of 20 or more clusters
  • Experience owning services with 99.99% availability service-level objectives (SLOs), and an understanding of the operational practices needed to sustain them
  • Experience using AI tools to improve team productivity, with lessons learned from both successes and missteps
  • Experience building and managing accountable, high-performing teams, including addressing underperformance and making difficult performance decisions when needed
  • Ability to lead complex projects to completion without relying on a dedicated Technical Program Manager
  • Experience leading distributed, remote teams effectively
