About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct research and analysis on illicit economies as part of the Global Organized Crime Index project
- Assist in organizing, running and following up on dissemination activities, including analytical pieces, podcasts, media engagements and CSO/expert meetings
- Coordinate between the core Index team, GI-TOC staff, GIN members and external experts
- Carry out research, participate in events and represent the Index team
- Track progress on tasks and communication with experts using appropriate templates
- Oversee day-to-day research and consolidation of country profiles and summaries produced by Research Assistants
- Introduce Research Assistants to the Index structure, methodology, research process and roles
- Assign and guide Research Assistants in independent desk research on country profiles
- Check Research Assistant work for quality, accuracy and alignment with guidelines
- Report weekly to the core implementation team on country-profile progress, challenges, Research Assistants, issues and deadlines
- Identify and contact organized-crime experts for scoring and verification
- Oversee expert verification of country profiles and thematic areas
- Monitor verification, follow up on deadlines, check submissions, and submit completed expert invoices
- Maintain Index progress records
- Consolidate expert input into final internal country profiles
- Edit profiles for accuracy, repetition, grammar and comprehensiveness
- Input major country developments and revise text according to Index guidelines
- Develop, validate and refine the SCAR framework methodology
- Conduct literature reviews and develop questionnaires measuring organized-crime harms and capabilities
- Research and finalize actor lists and profiles for the SCAR framework
- Coordinate data collection and scoring of criminal groups with relevant Observatories
- Identify, engage and coordinate experts contributing to SCAR
- Contribute to drafting, editing and design of Index publications
- Undertake other related tasks requested by supervisors
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as criminology, countering organized crime, international relations, or criminal justice
- Experience in investigations, analysis or research work on organized crime is desirable
- Ability to identify information gaps, research, synthesize information, develop analysis and write on tight timelines
- Experience in leveraging OSINT techniques as part of research
- Native or professional proficiency in spoken and written English
- Additional language skills in an UN language are a plus
- Motivated and enthusiastic to work in a fast-paced environment
- High degree of accuracy, detail orientation, and time management
- Comfortable operating with substantial autonomy
- Strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well as part of regional and global teams
- Sound judgment when handling sensitive information
- Practical assignment: complete either a Timor-Leste criminal-market/actor justification for 2025–2026 or an analytical brief using Global Organized Crime Index data, no more than 800 words
