About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead a small team of Python and Java engineers.
Develop and maintain Django services, Flink streaming pipelines, and Kafka streaming pipelines.
Drive technical direction and manage and mentor the team.
Review code and help turn algorithm prototypes into reliable, production-ready services.
Hire, mentor, and grow the team, including recruiting senior engineers, running performance conversations, and shaping team processes.
Set technical direction for the Django and Django REST Framework service, Java optimization and services work, and Flink and Kafka streaming pipelines.
Decide when research approaches are ready for production, identify when they need rethinking, and deliver them to production.
Own the Django service on PostgreSQL, including the data model, API surface, performance, and reliability.
Review pull requests and maintain quality standards for shipped work.
Run design reviews, planning, and postmortems.
Ensure cross-team work has an owner before it starts.

Requirements

What you’ll need

A degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Real engineering management experience, including owning hiring, performance, and delivery for a team.
Depth in Python or Java, with working fluency in the other.
Experience taking prototype or notebook work into a production system that you then had to run.
Hands-on PostgreSQL scaling, including query tuning, indexing, and schema design.
Ability to read query plans, identify problematic queries, and fix them.
Good technical judgment and ability to explain reasoning so the team can act on it.
