About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, document, and resolve customer power quality issues
  • Support, develop, implement, and plan commercial and residential power quality programs and services
  • Conduct onsite customer monitoring, field surveys, and site inspections
  • Schedule and present customer power quality and end-use technology workshops
  • Design and install power quality and data acquisition instrumentation systems and software
  • Participate in customer end-use technology projects involving equipment selection and sizing, economic feasibility, maintenance, operational issues, demand reduction, power factor optimization, and demand response
  • Conduct project design, cost alternative studies, and field inspections; prepare reports, plans, layouts, and design calculations
  • Research electro-technologies including HVAC&R, lighting, energy storage, renewable technologies, power factor correction, voltage dip ride-through, harmonic filtering, surge protection, control systems, and data analytics
  • Keep current with power quality, clean energy, customer, energy storage, and Internet technologies
  • Senior level: provide consultation to commercial, industrial, governmental, and residential customers
  • Senior level: co-develop the Open PQ Dashboard with EPRI and the Grid Power Alliance
  • Senior level: collaborate with System Operations, Engineering, account managers, Risk Management, Customer Service, Legal, and Demand Response
  • Senior level: serve as project engineer and construction manager for RD&D and customer systems optimization projects, including scheduling, budgeting, contractor supervision, and customer interface
  • Participate in assigned company emergency response activities and perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Electrical or Mechanical engineering degree (Bachelor of Science or Master of Science) from an ABET-accredited college or university is required
  • Thorough/detailed knowledge of engineering theories and principles
  • Knowledge of engineering design, project engineering, project management, construction methods, and electric utility facilities
  • Working/detailed knowledge of personal computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Visio, MicroStation, or other CAD software is highly desirable for the senior level
  • Knowledge of electrical power systems, distributed renewable energy generation, energy storage, emergency generator systems, power quality, HVAC&R, control systems, data acquisition, and remote communications for the senior level
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Hawaii or another U.S. state; must meet driving-position standards
  • Effective written, oral, listening, platform, and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership, analytical, organizational, planning, and conceptual skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, programs, and priorities concurrently
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and handle difficult or sensitive issues professionally
  • Senior level: ability to research, plan, organize, execute, and report with little supervision
  • Senior level: ability to perform independent research and detailed financial analysis
  • Power Quality Engineer: 1–3 years of relevant engineering work experience or project team experience desirable
  • Senior Power Quality Engineer: extensive experience, defined as 7 or more years, in engineering or a related technical field
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer (PE) License is desirable for the senior level
  • Marketing and/or economic analysis job experience and coursework desirable for the senior level
