About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead application engineering for a new Azure cloud platform supporting a multi-year modernization program
  • Architect and code new solutions while modernizing legacy applications
  • Set technical direction and establish reusable engineering patterns
  • Own target-state architecture for a unified client-facing and internal platform
  • Define canonical work models and composable module architecture
  • Design and enforce multi-tenant isolation and fine-grained authorization
  • Establish API and integration patterns for third-party platforms
  • Build resilient integrations with idempotent write-back, reconciliation, circuit breakers, caching, and graceful degradation
  • Modernize older .NET Framework, WCF, SQL, on-premises, and monolithic applications
  • Build cloud-native applications on Azure PaaS, including application and business-logic layers for a data and analytics platform
  • Select languages and frameworks and guide team adoption
  • Deliver application changes through CI/CD and partner with the Staff Azure Cloud Engineer on the paved path
  • Lead application data design and legacy data migration
  • Lead application security design and support SOC 2 controls
  • Set standards for coding, testing, quality gates, code review, observability, and incident response
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership through design decisions, code reviews, mentoring, and architecture decision records

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years building and operating production applications and services
  • Experience owning architecture and leading cross-functional delivery
  • Experience architecting multi-tenant applications with provable data isolation
  • Experience with customer and workforce identity, fine-grained authorization, and row-level security
  • Experience building API facades, backend-for-frontend layers, anti-corruption layers, canonical domain models, versioned contracts, event-driven synchronization, idempotent write-back, and resilient integrations
  • Deep expertise in at least one modern cloud language; C#/.NET is the largest footprint
  • Production fluency in Java, Go, Python, or Node.js/TypeScript
  • Experience modernizing monolithic, on-premises, or legacy applications to cloud-native patterns
  • Hands-on Azure PaaS application development with App Service or Container Apps, managed identity, Key Vault, and Service Bus or equivalent
  • Full-stack capability with a modern component-based TypeScript web UI, shared design system, and plugin or micro-frontend model
  • Strong relational data modeling and migration experience
  • Leadership in secure application development, including authentication, authorization, input validation, encryption, secrets management, OWASP practices, and SOC 2 controls
  • Experience delivering through CI/CD using GitHub Actions, GitHub Enterprise, or equivalent tools
  • Demonstrated technical leadership without formal authority
  • Preferred: plugin-based platform architectures; policy engines; data-dense client-facing interfaces; professional-services, tax, or accounting platform integrations; build-versus-buy judgment; incremental modernization patterns; SOC 2 or HIPAA audit-cycle experience; tax, accounting, financial services, or professional-services experience; Microsoft AZ-204 and/or AZ-305 or relevant certifications
