About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Architect, install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server instances across complex, multi-server Windows environments
- Lead end-to-end application performance engineering by analyzing execution plans, identifying problematic queries, and implementing code- and schema-level optimizations
- Monitor application and database performance using Extended Events, DMVs, Wait Statistics analysis, and third-party tooling
- Establish performance baselines and SLA-aligned alerting thresholds
- Design, implement, and test backup and recovery strategies; own RTO/RPO targets and validate them through recovery drills
- Architect and maintain HA/DR solutions including Always On Availability Groups and Log Shipping
- Govern database security through role-based access controls, auditing frameworks, and encryption strategies
- Own capacity planning and storage forecasting
- Review and approve schema migrations, deployment scripts, and ORM-generated queries before production
- Automate routine DBA tasks through PowerShell and SQL Agent
- Manage SQL Server patching and upgrades through formal change management, including pre- and post-upgrade validation
- Mentor junior and mid-level DBAs and contribute to knowledge-base and runbook documentation
- Serve as senior escalation point in the on-call rotation for Severity 1 database outages
- Lead incident response and post-incident reviews
Requirements
What you’ll need- 7+ years of hands-on SQL Server DBA experience in large-scale, mission-critical production environments
- Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server 2019 / 2025 on Windows Server 2019 / 2022
- Advanced T-SQL skills: query optimization, execution plan analysis, index design, partitioning, and performance troubleshooting
- Deep expertise in application performance tuning, including ORM anti-patterns, N+1 queries, lock contention, and blocking chains
- Experience architecting and supporting Always On Availability Groups, WSFC, and DR failover in enterprise environments
- Strong command of Wait Statistics, DMVs, Extended Events, and Query Store
- Experience with point-in-time database restores, high-availability failover, disaster recovery planning, and hands-on recovery testing
- Windows Server administration and Active Directory / Kerberos authentication for SQL Server
- Ability to lead technical projects and mentor junior team members
- Familiarity with ITIL change, incident, and problem management processes
- Microsoft certification DP-300 or legacy MCSE Data Management & Analytics is desirable/advantageous
- Experience with Azure SQL Database or SQL Server on Azure VMs in hybrid configurations is desirable/advantageous
- Exposure to APM tooling such as Dynatrace, AppDynamics, or New Relic is desirable/advantageous
- Proficiency with Redgate SQL Monitor, SolarWinds DPA, SentryOne, or equivalent database monitoring platforms is desirable/advantageous
- PowerShell scripting for DBA automation, including dbatools, is desirable/advantageous
- Experience with SSIS is desirable/advantageous
- Knowledge of GDPR, ISO 27001, or SOC 2 is desirable/advantageous
- Exposure to DevOps CI/CD database deployment pipelines is desirable/advantageous
