About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Acquire and verify insurance benefits and eligibility for scheduled surgical procedures
Explain surgical benefits clearly for each case
Call patients to explain in-network and out-of-network coverage
Determine when prior authorization is required
Obtain prior authorizations and payer-required surgical clearances
Obtain and review payer fee schedules and procedure reimbursement
Use Availity and UHC payer portals and phone lines
Handle payer and patient calls regarding benefits and authorizations
Document benefits, authorization, and clearance activity in Dr. Chrono and HST
Communicate clearly with patients, particularly an older patient population
Occasionally schedule surgeries when needed
Follow the practice’s training guides and workflows for benefits and authorizations

Requirements

What you’ll need

Clear, patient-understandable English in speaking and writing
Neutral accent that patients can easily understand
Hands-on experience with surgical authorizations and insurance benefits
Judgment to know when a prior authorization is required
Solid understanding of in-network and out-of-network benefits
Comfort working payer portals and making payer calls
Strong listening skills
Close attention to detail
Warm, professional manner with patients
Willingness to learn practice-specific terminology and workflows
