About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage all aspects of tax compliance and tax accounting for Highmark Health and its wholly and jointly owned subsidiaries
- Complete and remit government-mandated tax filings accurately and on time
- Prepare calculations, work papers, documentation, forms, attachments, and elections supporting tax filings
- Identify tax issues and opportunities and provide resolutions or recommendations to Tax Management
- Prepare GAAP and STAT tax provisions, including current calculations, deferred calculation roll-forwards, effective tax rate reconciliations, tax account roll-forwards, and uncertain tax positions
- Prepare financial statement disclosures
- Perform tax research and planning and communicate tax consequences to applicable parties
- Prepare tax forecasts and supporting calculations
- Manage federal and state/local tax examinations
- Represent Highmark Health and subsidiaries before applicable government authorities with Tax Management
- Participate in periodic meetings with subsidiaries regarding business and tax issues or opportunities
- Assist Tax Management with external auditors
- Provide direction, counseling, and instruction to other Tax Staff
- Monitor changes in tax law and research legislation summaries, tax journals, tax-related publications, and online databases
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required
- 6 years of related and progressive experience may substitute for a Bachelor's degree
- 5–10 years of relevant, progressive experience in the area of specialization required
- Tax accounting (ASC 740), tax compliance, and planning experience in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm
- Knowledge of federal taxes, including corporations, partnerships, trusts, tax-exempt organizations, property and casualty insurance companies, life insurance companies, employee benefits, and individual taxes
- Knowledge of state and local taxes and regulations across multiple jurisdictions
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP)
- Ability to coordinate tax, GAAP, and statutory accounting knowledge to design transactions and communicate impacts
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong relationship-building skills
- Client-focused with strong business acumen
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team under pressure
- Strategic thinking and proactive problem-solving capabilities
- Required licenses or certifications: None
- Preferred: Master's Degree in Business Administration or Taxation
- Preferred: Experience with Form 990, health system experience, auditing or accounting experience, statutory accounting and insurance taxation knowledge, CPA, Licensed Attorney

Comp & perks- Base salary range of $79,300.00–$127,100.00 per year
