About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design major components or major portions of functional systems to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations
  • Develop basic data, preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes to present design proposals
  • Investigate design factors including manufacturability, material and equipment availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specifications, and cost
  • Coordinate with organizations affected by design development
  • Create layouts of complex assemblies and detail parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures
  • Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, standards, procedures, specifications, calculation accuracy, and dimensioning
  • Identify design errors, omissions, and deficiencies and recommend revisions or improvements
  • Lead a group of designers responsible for Hull Outfitting commodities supporting aircraft carrier operational readiness and new construction ship delivery
  • Develop and deliver 2D drawings and model files for aircraft carrier new construction and class-wide maintenance and modernization efforts (ShipAlts)
  • Oversee design, maintenance, overhaul, and modernization support for Nimitz Class and Ford Class propulsion plants
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with Fleet, Public Shipyards, Supply Chain, NAVSEA, NNL, engineer/designer leads, and NNS Waterfront Construction Engineering/Trades
  • Use NX, Team Center, TCViz, SAP, i2, AutoCAD, Access Databases, and Microsoft Office
  • Ensure deliverables are technically accurate, high quality, compliant with specifications, and completed on schedule

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Design Apprentice certification or Associate's degree in Design with 6 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years of applicable experience
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Experience leading design personnel in the design and maintenance of naval vessels is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience interfacing with Engineering, US Government customers, the NNS shipbuilder, and ship maintenance activities within the Fleet and public shipyards
  • Ability to work independently while overseeing multiple commitments and reacting to changing priorities
  • Strong background in Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) and the CVN78 Class Product Model is preferred
  • Knowledge of TCViz, SAP, BOMs, i2, PREPY-1, and automated piping drawings is a plus
  • Experience with commodity management and shipbuilding design and development processes, including Ship, Platen, and waterfront shops is helpful
  • Commitment to actively leading a culturally transformative effort within the area of responsibility
  • High level of leadership engagement to ensure employees are cared for and developed, collaboration is established between Design and Engineering, and deliverables meet technical, quality, specification, and schedule requirements
