About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Research, plan, design, and develop mechanical products and systems
  • Serve as a technical expert for Facilities’ mechanical systems, utility systems, process piping, fire protection/life safety systems, production equipment, and construction and repair specifications/requirements
  • Provide technical leadership and direction on mechanical-related matters
  • Ensure inspections, routine maintenance, and construction projects comply with applicable codes and NNS specifications/requirements
  • Perform mechanical evaluations and building/infrastructure assessments
  • Respond to emergent safety-related issues in a large industrial facility
  • Lead root cause analyses and develop corrective actions for unplanned events
  • Direct consultants’ and contractors’ work assignments
  • Support design reviews of contractor project submittals
  • Prepare and/or review studies and recommendations for the Facilities’ Long Range Strategic Plan
  • Support strategic business development and strategic initiatives
  • Complete assigned tasks on schedule and within budget
  • Mentor younger engineers within the Plant Engineering organization

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; or Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Knowledge of pertinent Building Codes, Virginia Codes, NFPA Standards/Codes, ASHRAE Recommendations, and OSHA regulations
  • Experience with heavy industrial facilities
  • Ability to gain and maintain a Confidential level security clearance
  • AutoCAD and Inventor experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection, Mechanical, or other related discipline (nice to have)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and rapport with NNS production, engineering, safety, maintenance, and contractor personnel
