About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design major components or major portions of functional systems to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations
  • Develop basic data, preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes for design proposals
  • Investigate design factors including manufacturability, material and equipment availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-to-weight efficiency, contractual specifications, and cost
  • Coordinate with organizations affected by design development
  • Create layouts of complex assemblies and details of parts, devices, mechanisms, and structures
  • Check layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, standards, procedures, specifications, calculations, and dimensioning accuracy
  • Identify design errors, omissions, and deficiencies and recommend revisions or improvements
  • Manage a team of Engineering Designers responsible for Machinery and Propulsion systems
  • Modify existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations
  • Gather information, conduct studies, perform calculations, and prepare original rough layouts and sketches
  • Coordinate design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning groups
  • Lead the entire Detail Design organization for multiple programs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent
  • Equivalent education and experience option: high school diploma and 14 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design or equivalent
  • Equivalent education and experience option: Associate's Degree and 10 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design or equivalent
  • Fluent understanding of Ship Specifications in all areas of Detail Design
  • Superior communication skills, including past experience interfacing with Operations and the Navy
  • Leadership experience with small to large projects within Detail Design
  • Formal Leadership training is preferred
  • Good understanding of EVMS
  • Experience creating plans, including estimating, budget allocation, process development, and schedule creation
  • Experience managing Engineering Designers
  • Experience with AUTOCAD, SHIP CONSTRUCTOR, and NAVISWORKS
  • U.S. citizenship required
