About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Act as Senior Counsel for Newport News Shipbuilding’s legal matters
  • Assume overall responsibility, accountability, and authority for legal matters across NNS’s government contracts portfolio
  • Serve as program counsel to one of NNS’s major business lines
  • Provide legal expertise, business counsel, and training, including contracting strategy, negotiations, and change management
  • Counsel business partners and train, mentor, and partner with colleagues and clients
  • Integrate practical business advice into legal counsel and help position the business to avoid potential problems
  • Provide strategic and day-to-day legal and business counsel to NNS leadership, including Vice President-level leadership
  • Draft, review, and advise on commercial supplier agreements, teaming agreements, letters of intent, memorandums of understanding, non-disclosure agreements, supplier terms, and similar agreements
  • Assist with significant NNS matters and additional law department responsibilities, including operations, facilities, environmental, real estate, tax, or ethics
  • Act as agent of the corporation in various transactions and advise on risk assessment
  • Develop, review, or implement company-wide or function-specific training programs
  • Oversee corporate governance matters and committees
  • Work with outside counsel to direct activities
  • Report directly to the Vice President and Chief Counsel of NNS

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Juris Doctor Law degree and 6 years of experience
  • License to practice law in Virginia or another state that allows for a corporate membership to the Virginia State Bar
  • 6 years of experience as a practicing attorney with substantial experience in Government Contracts law, commercial litigation, or commercial transactions and contracting
  • Must have active security clearance or the ability to obtain a security clearance
  • US citizenship required
