About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Analyze, research and develop structural engineering specifications for product design and operation
- Analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
- Prepare technical submittals, design proposals, drawing reviews, presentations, operating instructions, test procedures, maintenance procedures, work deferral requests and departure from specification requests
- Perform dynamic structural shock analyses using finite element analysis methods and computer applications
- Perform hand calculations and develop engineering calculation reports
- Check structural analysis reports
- Coordinate with design, test and construction teams and external customers, including NAVSEA, General Dynamics - Electric Boat and vendors
- Support shock and vibration qualification of equipment
- Support static and dynamic analyses of steel structures
- Support naval shock and vibration analysis related to foundation design
- Support design and construction of Virginia- and Columbia-Class submarines, SSNX, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and BBGN battleships
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; or Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
- U.S. citizenship required
- Ability to analyze and research structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials
- Understanding of damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
- Ability to perform dynamic structural (shock) analyses using finite element analysis methods
- Experience with FEMAP and NASTRAN, Abaqus, Hypermesh, Government codes, or similar computer applications
- Ability to perform hand calculations using textbook methods
- Ability to develop engineering calculation reports and check structural analysis reports
- Ability to coordinate with design, test, construction teams and external customers
- Experience or familiarity with submarine or carrier ship systems and structure
- Knowledge of structural fabrication, assembly, and final outfitting
- Ability to read and understand system schematics and drawings
- Familiarity with FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, ATIS, DDMS, and/or MatLab
- SAP, TeamCenter, NGP, or NX software experience
- Knowledge of SUBSAFE requirements
- DOD Security Clearance preferred, but not required to start
