About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support structural engineering activities for propulsion plants
  • Develop structural designs for new aircraft carriers, modernization of the existing aircraft carrier fleet, a new battleship class, and standard Navy valve designs
  • Analyze, research, and develop structural engineering specifications for metals, non-metallic, and composite structural materials
  • Perform structural analyses involving structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical/electronics, power plant, armament, heating/ventilating, equipment, and maintenance designs
  • Analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowables, and structural modeling
  • Perform dynamics and loads, stability and stress, fatigue, and thermal analyses
  • Develop engineering calculation reports and check structural analysis reports
  • Report area-of-cognizance matters to NNS management and the Navy customer
  • Collaborate with construction, other engineering disciplines, value stream customers, and designers
  • Train and help manage junior-level engineers
  • Communicate engineering resolutions and approve changes to CAD models

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; or Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; or Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA) methods with FEMAP and ABAQUS
  • Proficiency in hand calculations using textbook methods
  • Experience developing engineering calculation reports and checking structural analysis reports
  • Ability to train and help manage junior-level engineers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervisor oversight
  • Excellent collaboration skills
  • Experience with Siemens TEAMCENTER, FEMAP, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, MATHCAD and other engineering/design software applications
  • Ability to work with designers to communicate engineering resolutions and approve changes to CAD models
