About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform structural welding using SMAW (stick welding) and FCAW (wire welding)
- Join together various metal materials to fabricate and assemble ship components
- Read and interpret drawings, arrangements, weld symbols, and basic blueprints
- Work in shipboard environments including heights, confined spaces, varying weather conditions, and around-the-clock production areas
- Support production needs in a 24/7 manufacturing environment and be available for any shift
- Build naval vessels for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard as part of Ingalls Shipbuilding
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of 6 months of work experience in FCAW (Flux Core) and SMAW (Stick) welding
- Ability to pass military standard tests in the vertical (3G), horizontal (2G) and overhead (4G) positions
- Successful completion of a welding technical training certification program may be accepted in lieu of the experience requirement
- Ability to pass a hands-on skill assessment; the weld test is for x-ray quality
- Experience with structural or industrial welding, including SMAW and/or FCAW
- Ability to read basic weld symbols, measurements, and drawings
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and workmanship
- Willingness to work in active shipyard environments
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, varying weather conditions, and around-the-clock production areas
- Availability for any shift in a 24/7 manufacturing environment
- High School Diploma or Equivalent is preferred
- Previous experience in shipbuilding is preferred
