About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead a team of transportation planners and engineers
  • Oversee projects involving bicycle, pedestrian, transit, rail, freight, and multimodal mobility improvements
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor and develop staff
  • Support business development, client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities
  • Lead planning and engineering assignments while managing scope, schedule, budget, and quality
  • Coordinate project priorities, staffing plans, and resource allocation
  • Develop, monitor, and manage the section’s operating budget
  • Manage the growth and professional development of the planning section
  • Coordinate section activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to jobs
  • Collaborate with other sections and departments on work-sharing opportunities
  • Support strategic planning, contracting, and project delivery processes
  • Conduct work planning, monthly project reviews, and project performance activities
  • Maintain client contacts and ensure client satisfaction
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain section staff
  • Manage assigned project activities and perform technical tasks including research, reports, design, specifications, and plan preparation
  • Lead a team with direct and indirect supervision of at least 5, typically 7–10 or more employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
  • 8 years relevant experience
  • 2 years of project leadership experience
  • Preferred: Master’s or Bachelor's Degree in Traffic Engineering, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, or related field
  • Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE), American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) and/or Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
  • Preferred: 10 years of relevant experience
  • Preferred: 2 years supervisory experience
