About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Define and drive the Database Platform technical roadmap with engineering leadership and the Pentest Platform organization
  • Own database architecture decisions including schema design, partitioning strategies, migration patterns, and scalability approaches
  • Write design documents that establish the team's shared technical model
  • Serve as the definitive PostgreSQL expert on query optimization, indexing, partitioning, replication, and connection pooling
  • Architect and guide the evolution of NodeZero's graph-based asset model representing hosts, services, credentials, and vulnerabilities across pentests
  • Govern schema design reviews and ensure migrations are safe, reversible, and zero-downtime
  • Build tooling and engineering practices for rigorous schema changes
  • Mentor P5 and P4 engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and pairing
  • Partner with Data Ingestion, Asset Inventory, API Platform, and Security Research on data contracts, query performance standards, and architectural guardrails
  • Write production code and set technical direction for the Database Platform team

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Deep, production-proven PostgreSQL expertise, including query planner internals, advanced indexing, partitioning, logical replication, vacuuming at scale, and connection pool tuning
  • Experience architecting multi-tenant databases at scale, including row-level security and tenant isolation
  • Experience with production schema migrations at scale, including zero-downtime migrations, backwards-compatible schema evolution, and migration tooling such as Flyway or golang-migrate
  • Familiarity with graph data models and graph databases such as Neo4j or AWS Neptune, or graph-like relational query patterns such as recursive CTEs, ltree, and adjacency lists
  • Proficient in Go or Python and able to write production application code
  • Demonstrated track record defining database architecture at scale from design document through production across multiple companies or teams
  • Strong understanding of data architecture tradeoffs, including normalization vs. denormalization, consistency vs. availability, OLTP vs. OLAP separation, and schema-first vs. schema-last design
  • Ability to reason about long-horizon schema design and 10× data-volume growth
  • Ability to communicate complex database decisions clearly in design documents, ADRs, and cross-team reviews
  • Proven ability to drive database standards across multiple teams without direct reporting authority
  • Experience establishing schema review, migration safety, and query performance review processes
  • Track record of mentoring engineers through code review, pair programming, and architectural mentorship
  • Cybersecurity data background, time-series database experience, compliance familiarity, analytical query or BI/reporting experience, and open-source contributions are nice to haves
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Full-time availability
