About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and run high-performance, high-scale public and private APIs and internal services
  • Develop authentication, provisioning, webhooks, websockets, webmail, contacts, calendar, and email migration/import systems
  • Build routing, policy, and spam-filtering systems
  • Own features end to end from discovery through deployment and post-deployment follow-up
  • Work mostly in PHP and use Go for high-scale, high-availability components
  • Optimize slow queries and system performance for millions of mailboxes
  • Harden authentication, sessions, and security edge cases
  • Monitor production systems with Grafana, Sentry, and alerting
  • Improve team tooling, automation, and documentation
  • Participate in code reviews and raise engineering standards
  • Collaborate with system engineers, backend and frontend developers, QA engineers, Customer Support, Security, Network, Storage, and infrastructure teams
  • Help shape platform architecture and development patterns

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong core software engineering principles
  • Clean architecture and sound engineering judgment
  • System design thinking, including consistency-versus-latency and synchronous-versus-asynchronous trade-offs
  • Understanding of distributed, event-driven systems, including queues, webhooks, retries, and idempotency
  • Solid understanding of databases, caches, and queues, including schema design and indexing
  • REST API design principles, including versioning and backward compatibility
  • Primary day-to-day PHP experience
  • Willingness to learn Go
  • Experience with PHP/Laravel
  • Nice to have: hands-on Go experience
  • Nice to have: familiarity with IMAP and SMTP
  • Nice to have: real-time systems experience, including WebSockets or pub/sub
  • Nice to have: message queues and data pipelines, including RabbitMQ, Kafka/Redpanda, or ClickHouse
  • Nice to have: experience with AI coding assistants such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot
