About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design and develop Python-based components for the core agentic platform
- Deploy, manage, and scale applications within Kubernetes environments
- Build Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and reusable AI skills enabling agents to interact safely with databases, microservices, and external APIs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to expose Java-based APIs to AI agents
- Implement enterprise AI guardrails for data privacy, sensitive data scrubbing, prompt injection defenses, and output validation
- Perform testing, including automated testing pipelines for non-deterministic AI outputs
- Troubleshoot issues and work under pressure across multiple deadlines
- Transition between hands-on execution and team guidance
- Provide mentorship and team leadership
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance; not required on day one
- U.S. Citizenship required
- 9 years of experience in Software Engineering with a strong focus on Python backend development and a Bachelor's in a related field; or 7 years of relevant experience with a Master's in a related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years of relevant experience
- Hands-on experience deploying and managing containerized workloads in Kubernetes (K8s)
- Hands-on experience integrating commercial LLM APIs or open-source models into production backend applications
- Understanding of prompt engineering, agents, function-calling/tool-use, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Experience designing enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, and microservices architecture
- Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Docker
- Comfortable working on a Linux command line
- Experience serving as a tech lead, mentor, or manager for engineering teams
- Must work in a hybrid environment, averaging 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, MD office
- Flexibility to adapt to schedule changes as needed
- Preferred: Active Secret or Top Secret clearance
- Preferred: Familiarity with Java frameworks such as Spring or Java-based software capabilities
- Preferred: Familiarity with LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, or AutoGen
- Preferred: Experience with vector databases, semantic caching, and AI observability tools
- Preferred: Experience with NiFi, Kafka, AWS, or Azure
- Preferred: Experience with SQL, distributed, or NoSQL databases
- Preferred: Big Data Platforms or Data Lake architectures familiarity
