About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide editorial support for technical brochures, standard operating procedures, research reports, technical summaries, and other highly technical documents
- Apply TFHRC, U.S. Government Publishing Office, and Chicago style guidance
- Ensure content supports Section 508 accessibility and copyright, licensing, attribution, and reference requirements
- Distill complex data into accurate, clear, professional graphics and narrative content
- Fact-check content and adapt references to client and style standards
- Perform line editing, copy editing, proofreading, substantive editing, and plain-language editing
- Correct content structure, organization, grammar, spelling, accuracy, style, readability, and consistency issues
- Collaborate with clients and staff to develop and deliver high-quality work
- Maintain consistency with established guidelines and strategy
- Maintain up-to-date editorial guidelines
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, or a related scientific or technical field
- 3–10 years of professional experience in technical writing, technical documentation, editing, proofing, copy editing, and/or substantive editing of technical information and publications
- Experience with GPO and applying government/agency editorial standards
- 3–10 years of experience reviewing complex technical material for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness
- At least 1 year applying the TFHRC Research, Development, and Technology Communication Reference Guide and the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual
- Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style for matters not covered by required guides
- Ability to obtain a government security clearance if required by contract
- Excellent command of grammar, syntax, usage, punctuation, style, and editorial conventions
- Strong editorial judgment and ability to resolve substantive issues in complex technical content
- Experience with reference checking, fact checking, copyright compliance, attribution, source materials, and publication QA/QC
- Experience managing documents through the complete editorial and publication lifecycle
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and PowerPoint
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, PDF/document production, accessibility, online publishing, shared workspaces, or collaboration tools
- Experience collaborating with engineers, developers, technical subject matter experts, project staff, authors, and reviewers
- Transportation industry experience, particularly highway and surface transportation
- Experience editing engineering, research, scientific, or highly technical documentation
- Experience supporting government or agency publications
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
- Self-directed and resourceful; able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, collaborate effectively, and adapt to changing priorities
